Religion in Indonesia plays an important role in people's lives. This is stated in the ideology of the Indonesian nation, Pancasila: "The Almighty God." This is a compromise between the idea of an Islamic state and a secular state. A number of religions in Indonesia influence collectively on politics, economics and culture. According to the results of the 2010 Indonesian Population Census, 87.18% of the 237,641,326 Indonesians were Muslims (the archipelago is the country with the most Muslim population in the world), 6.96% Christian, 2.9% Catholic, 1.69 % Hindu, 0.72% Buddhist, 0.05% Confucian, 0.13% other religions, and 0.38% missed or not asked.

In the 1945 Constitution it is stated that "each citizen is given the freedom to choose and practice his beliefs" and "guarantee all of them the freedom to worship, according to their religion or beliefs". In Presidential Decree No. 1 of 1965 concerning Prevention of Abuse and / or Blasphemy of Religion, however, it officially only recognizes six religions, namely Islam, Protestantism, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Confucianism. Recently, the flow of belief (native religions of the archipelago) has also been recognized in accordance with the Decision of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Indonesia dated November 7, 2017.

With the many religions and beliefs that exist in Indonesia, inter-religious conflicts are often inevitable. Moreover, Indonesia's political leadership plays an important role in relations between groups and groups.
